Homeowners are better educated than ever. CAN YOU STAND IT?

One of my favourite renovators, David Litwiller, president of Litwiller Developments in Calgary, conducts seminars for homeowners to help them prepare for their next renovation. He sent me the working notes of his next seminar and, as I read his notes, I wondered if Canadian Contractor readers were ready to stand the scrutiny of the educated homeowners he was soon to be unleashing on the Calgary renovation industry.

I was impressed with the questions he was telling his homeowners to ask you. For instance, he suggests it’s fair game to ask if you  have any outstanding lawsuits. He says to homeowners, “Never should you feel uncomfortable or invasive when asking questions of the renovator.”

He places a lot of emphasis on insisting on a written agreement, because, he says, it indicates that the contractor has “truly listened to you, heard your concerns, identified the quality of products intended for your project, and indicated expected timelines”.
