There are bylaws in Calgary for home renovations and basement projects.
However, if you’re renovating a basement, it is unlikely that you will require anything more than a building safety approval.
According to the City of Calgary:
“Typically, interior renovations and changes to existing basements do NOT need a permit when the work consists of minor cosmetic upgrades.
In most situations, your interior renovation or basement development will only require a building safety approval (building permit).
If your design or location does not meet land use bylaw specifications, you will also require planning approval (development permit). ”

Special regulations apply to windows in Calgary basements, as set out in the Alberta Building Code.
All basement windows must comply with egress (fire) window codes.
- They must have 3.8. sq. ft. of clear opening for a person to crawl through

- Maximum recommended window height above finished floor: 5 feet
